Tips for Shovelling Snow
Pick the right tool for the job
A sturdy but lightweight shovel is best. Try coating the blade with cooking spray so the snow doesn’t stick.
Bend your knees; the blade should just touch the ground without you having to lean too far forward.
Be mindful of your shovelling technique
If you can, push the snow—don’t lift it. If you must lift, squat with your legs apart, knees bent, and back straight, and then lift with your legs. Don’t bend at the waist; turn your body instead of twisting.
Warm up before you shovel
Do a few instep paces before you start. Do some arm, leg, and back stretches.
Take a break
Pace yourself, and take frequent breaks. Dress in layers so you can remove or add clothes.
Consider buying or borrowing a snow thrower
A snow thrower puts a lot less stress on your back than shovelling, or better yet, hire the teenager next door to shovel for you!
Have a safe and happy holiday season!
